DJ and Production Introductory Courses
An Introduction : DJ Mixing - Scratching - Audio Production

All our courses are one on one, 2 hour introductory sessions set in a friendly environment.

The aim of the session is not to turn you into a superstar dj or producer. If this was possible in two hours, you wouldn't need us. In contrast to all the other bootcamps and schools out there we are more concerned with making you comfortable with the concepts & history behind DJing and producing, so that when you leave you will understand what it's all about should you want to pursue it. More importantly, you will have had fun and experienced a side of life you have probably only seen from a distance. We can guarantee you this because the recordstore is home to a functioning production studio, four internationally released dance producers, a record label and an events/promotion crew.

At $150 (including GST) for two hours, we are better value than anyone else around,

DJ Mixing
Ever wanted to be a DJ but didn't know what was going on in the booth? This DJ mixing taster course will teach you the tricks of the trade with a one-on-one lesson in our inner city underground record store. Learn beat mixing, blending and track selection from DJs with years of experience!

Whether you just want to know how it's done, feel the urge to dabble or are seriously considering DJ'ing as a career path, there are a few fundamental things about mixing which remain relevant across all musical genres and formats.

During this DJ mixing taster course you will learn these things exclusively on vinyl records. Mixing was invented on vinyl and you can only truly understand the basics behind DJ'ing by using it, without any digital readouts to distract or help you! Knowledge and skills gained while mixing vinyl can then be easily transferred to digital media.

You will spend your two-hour one-on-one DJ lesson in a real, live record store, surrounded by the latest releases.

This is your chance to put your hands on real records and mix them, all the while gaining insights into where and how mixing came about. You will learn what BPM is and why certain plugs must go certain ways. You will learn about what the industry calls train-wrecks, crowd pleasers and much, much more!

Your teacher is a working Sydney DJ with years of experience. He will explain not only the mechanics of mixing, but also the ins and outs of gigs, music buying and the DJ lifestyle.

So come and learn DJ mixing with people who are passionate about music, mixing and vinyl and share their knowledge and experience of this exciting world.

 Hip Hop Scratching
Do you know the difference between a Crab and a Flare? You will after a DJ scratching taster course in our inner city underground record store! Learn the basics of scratching and the history of hip hop from a working Sydney DJ with years of mixing experience. Are you ready to battle?

If you've ever pulled a record back and forth and liked the noise, then you've been hooked by scratching! But there's a lot more too it, as you will learn with our hip hop and scratching taster course.

Your lesson will be conducted exclusively on vinyl records. This is how scratching was invented and the fundamentals are best learnt without digital bells and whistles to distract you! Your new-found knowledge and skills are then easily transferred to digital media.

Once your lesson starts, you will learn that there are literally hundreds of different ways to scratch, each with its own name but all made up of the same underlying basic moves, and you will get to try many of these on the day. You will also see how you can make records say things by scratching samples in certain ways and learn about beat-juggling in order to create new rhythms from old ones.

You will learn about who invented scratching and why and hear stories of some classic battles that have happened at the world scratching championships.

We provide all the tools and equipment for your DJ scratching course and have the largest range of battle weapons - records with scratch-friendly samples on them - in Sydney. We will even show you the correct way to set up turntables and speakers at home.

The bonus of one-on-one scratching sessions is that you can learn at your own pace. If you want to stick to one area of interest, you can! But most importantly, you will have fun. There's no right or wrong way to scratch or beat juggle, so after you learn the basics, it's all about creating your own style!

If you've ever had a great idea for a song but never learnt the difference between midi and audio then this sound production taster course is just the thing for you. Learn software composition and production from experienced electronic music producers during one-on-one lessons in our Sydney studio!

Whether you hear the lyrics in your head or feel the rhythm in your toes, the trick lies in getting the music out of you and into a form that other people can enjoy.

Modern audio production software makes this more affordable, but not everyone has time to study a manual!

So if you would like to learn from professionals while soaking up the atmosphere in our inner-city custom-built sound recording studio then come on down to the heart of Sydney's cultural quarter for a one-on-one audio production course!

During your course you will learn about audio recording and production using industry-leading software brands. We normally use Ableton Live, because of its simple intuitive interface and powerful recording, mixing and performance abilities, but you can also request to learn on Cubase, Logic, Sonar or Pro Tools.

With these music production programs you can create and perform your own music or mix up other people's, so we ask you to choose from three different sessions.

These are:

A. An introduction and overview to the whole creative process. This is perfect for beginners.

B. A more nuanced session explaining specific aspects of music software. This option is for people who've already dabbled a little in audio production.

C. A course focusing solely on mixing and mashing up your favourite songs!

Whichever course you choose, you will get to compose and arrange your own song or mix while learning the concepts behind production and mastering. You'll learn about recording and sampling and get your hands on the keyboard to begin your very own song or mix, so bring along those ideas!

After your audio production course you might walk away with the key to unlocking a brilliant career in music production!

Sessions availble on request.
